Speakeasy

The port from Unity to Ren’py for Speakeasy is coming along really well. All the core items that ensure the game plays smoothly are complete, and now we’re down to the finer details like sprite placement, scene transitions, and sound effects. This is the most time-intensive phase and one of the most critical to get right because it’ll be what defines the player experience.

Here’s a look at the progress and some of the new features.

TEXT BOX & NAVIGATION

The new text box features a handy array of tools and navigational items. Quick access items include: screenshot tool, a button that hides the text box, auto forward, skip, back, menu, save, load, and settings. Watch the above gif to see some of these features in action.

MAIN MENU

The main menu has been redesigned, but still contains the same features as the original game that allows players to navigate directly to starting a new game, continuing a save file, viewing the CG gallery, adjusting settings, or exiting the game. But now there’s a bonus Momo hanging around.

CG GALLERY

The CG Gallery has also received a new look! The gallery is now sorted into pages, and each love interest receives their own page. There are placeholders for each image, so players will know if they’ve collected all CGs or still have some to find within the game. Also, there’s a new toggle that allows players to turn on/off the sexual content, for safe viewing when needed. Playing in SFW mode will still skip over the R18 CGs and will not add them to the gallery.

SEXUAL CONTENT ON/OFF

The screen that appears at the start when a player selects “NEW GAME” has received a handsome redesign featuring Milo and Vincent. After making a selection, there’s a pop-up that allows players to confirm that they’ve made the choice they were intending to.

There are lots of new, exciting features to look forward to in V2.0. But one of the best parts is that the game size has shrunk down to a fraction of what it used to be, meaning less space required on hard drives and better performance. And just a reminder, anyone who has previously purchased the game or received a key through Kickstarter for itch.io or Steam will have access to the new version. But since this is a brand new build on a different game engine, save files will not transfer over.
